Civilization
and life developed around the waterways...… Water
is a resource and at the same time a not-to-be-ignored
element of naturality, but also a way to communicate
and transport goods and people.
The Bishop of Lucca went to Pisa through the waterway:
from the harbour on Padule in Lucca they reached the
lake of Bientina, and then arrived in Arno – in
no less than 8 hours! Now that way has been drained
and reclaimed, but the lake of Massaciuccoli can give
us an idea of what would that ancient floodplains have
been in the past. Even the coast, with its coast woods,
the dunes and the mouths of the rivers can be a perfect
place for those who like doing bird-watching or sea-watching
– and wonders will never cease!
